NFL Europe was considered the next best thing. This gave alot of players a chance to show their stuff in game conditions.

While I was trying to re-familiarize myself with the relationships with pro teams here, I read that they're closing shop. So now, for many players, there's nothing between regular civilian work and the practice squad.

There are 2-3 other avenues:

Arena ball

Canada (the Flutie route; man what a great athlete!)

Then there's semi-pro ball.

These guys put in a 40-50hr work week, practice most nights, and then play once a week (I think).

I guess the NFL has enough on their plate, and just keep their scouts on the road.

There's no "advertised" reason, but there seems to be enough talent around that the teams feel they can plug into their system, when needed.

That's all I can figure.

It WASN'T going to be a minor league, it was going to be a Second league, for players who would have been drafted in the second round or later by the NFL. If you think that is a Minor league then 2 names-Tom Brady(I believe it was 6th round and he was pick 199) and Joe Montana(3rd round). How about Willie Parker-1200 first season and 1500 second year and was UNDRAFTED, and he did sit out his rookie year so I'm going by as a starter. There are some great players they could get if they go by 2nd or even 3rd round NFL guys. Anyway I think their league sounds like a good idea, and would even be better if they could somehow make a deal with the NFL so it was more of a minor league instead. That way you get the good players and they develop, as long as the NFL doesn't use it as a development level where the player is gone after a year or two. If they did that then we might as well just watch college.

Considering the league recently blew up the NFL Europa...not sure on how well a league owned minor league would do.

In essence, though, one could see the CFL's eight franchises as minor league teams. The Canadians have developed such talents as Warren Moon, Doug Flutie and even a coach like Marv Levy before they plied their trade on NFL fields...or returned to the NFL in Flutie's case.

Some might also argue that the NCAA is the minor league for the NFL.

Problem with the minor league concept in football is the brutality of the game. The player careers are relatively short and it is hard to justify trying to develop players when the amount of money involved is monstrous...you either make the team or you are beaten out by someone better.

This being said, would Warren Moon be in the Hall of Fame without his first few years running the Edmonton Eskimos for training before heading to Houston?

No. Minor Leagues would not be successful. Look at the recent attempts for alternative leagues with the same basis as the NFL.... NFL Europe, the XFL.... they failed miserably. The feeder league for the NFL is NCAA football, and it will continue to be that. People do not want to pay to watch second rate players, and there are alternatives for an NFL failure to enter, each having its own special differences in rules (arena league, canadian, etc.), but none of these leagues would work as an actual feeder. There is just too much of a drop off in talent.

I don't know who would play in it. The best players would still want to play major college football for the exposure. A minor league couldn't compete with the likes of Ohio State, USC, LSU, Michigan, Texas, Notre Dame and teams like that. There's also the Canadian Football League, which I think is underrated. Any minor league the NFL had would have to work hard to get players.

It's not officially called a minor league, but college football serves rather well as a minor league for the NFL.

I think that football being such a tough game it may not be all that wise to have a minor league. To many chances for a good player to get hurt. They should uses the college football as their minor league. Kind of the way it is.
