I found a penny made in 1865 buried about 6 inches in the ground in a railroad service path and it is in good condition, how much would it be worth now?

You have a U.S. Indian Head cent. They were designed by James B. Longacre. They were minted from 1859-1909. The year 1865 had a mintage of 35,429,286. If your coin grades G-4 (good) it has a value of $10.00. If it grades VG-8 (very good) it has the value of $15.00. If it grades F-12 (fine) its value would be $20.00. If I were to guess I would say your coin grades very good although I could be wrong. I hope this information helps answer your question.

The silver dollars (1878-1896) were .77 oz of silver, so they are worth at least their melt value, which would be about $15. Just as an example, if the 1878 dollar (assuming it has a mint mark of CC, the more common one) were professionally graded to have a quality of MS60 (unlikely) it would have a rare coin value of around $1,000. The pennys are all made of copper and are unlikely to be worth anything much beyond face value unless they are in very good condition.

Mirrorcoin has it about right, his values are a little to high The Red Book's pricing is for retail and is usually to high. In grade good it has a value of $4.25 and up in grade fine about $13. This is about what a dealer would pay. Nice find, to bad it could not tell us how it got there. !865 was not one of the better years for the U.S. and coins were just starting to show back up after being hoarded during the Civil War. You have a nice historic coin.

If it was buried the condition on it is probably lower. Mirrorcoin gave you some good estimates but the best way to know would be to go to a coin shop near you and have the people there help you.

They will be able to tell you what kind of a grade it is and how much they are selling for at the moment.

I have to guess that you are in the good ol' USA. Actually the value of old coins is totally dependent on two things.
1. Rarity. How many were made?
2. Condition. How like "new" is it?
