I have so much to do. Weed garden, pay bills, clean kitchen, clean bathrooms, clean up after my bird (who is so messy!) and do the laundry....I don't know where to start. I just want to go hide under a blanket...yes, I'm too old to be feeling these things....what do you do to help you tackle a big to-do list? How can I make this fun for me or make a game of it or anything to help me get this stuff done!?

Prioritize and set goals.

Bills, cleaning and laundry. Monday
Weeding, cleaning up after bird. Tuesday

Or some variety of this order. Once you establish a priority and order, it will not seem so overwhelming.

Hope this helps.

I am 68 years old and hadi-capped, I have osteo arthritis in the severe degenerative stages. I don't walk well. I've been up since two A.M. and I'll be up until bedtime at eleven tonight, I may or may not take a nap. My wife will encourage me.
I will go out in the yard before sun-up and water our huge Yard and garden by hand, make sure every things watered in this heat.
My wife and I will go over the whole yard and weed and care for it. Then I will go down in my wood working shop until I get tired of working on projects, then it will be supper. I usually do the cooking, my wife is still in the garden, she's 70 by the way.
After supper I will wash dishes and clean the kitchen, I have pain you wouldn't believe but, I'm on drugs, yes drugs, you wouldn't be able to have the pain I have without them. I've had surgery twelve times on my spine, I have 32 wires and 12 cadaver bones in my spine, not including the 12 bones from my hips. I also have a ten inch plate in my hand.

I try to be quiet in the evening so I don't worry my wife but, sometimes the pain has been so great I've cried. There's nothing anyone can do so, I try and keep busy. I only hope my time is close to stop this pain.

Now, what were you saying about being "overwhelmed" and, didn't know where to start?

Huh, this isn't exactly to tell you what to do or how to do it. I just wanted to respond and let you know that you AREN'T alone! I'm starting to think that being overwhelmed is an American state of being.

Personally, my state of being is better if I start with one easy thing-something to cross off the list-like wash the dishes. Then, I move to my bedroom and make sure it is done. That way, I always have a place to retreat when I get overwhelmed. After that, to me it is just a matter of picking one thing to start and going from there.

I hate mopping the floors (whole house) and ironing. Yuck.

Good luck!

I agree to pick one task a day - and if you miss it - it can wait till next week. I have the same problems. Part of it is recognizing you can't have a spotless house unless all you do is clean or hire a maid.
If you have kids - make them responsible for part of the upkeep and don't pay them - they do live there too and should have some responsibility to help maintain their environment. Do you get paid to pick up after yourself? They shouldn't either.

Take off your shoes, put on some of your favorite music, light a few candles, then prioritize and just do it! A glass of wine helps too!

Just one thing at a time, play your favourite music and sing along the way.
