Dawn is not the only one.
Lemon Joy is also recommended to kill garden insects.
There must be some sort of chemical in there that kills the bugs.
We use Joy on our roses and veggies.

among other things dawn has a ingrident thats a degreaser
thats what knocks out the bugs, and protects plants with a light coating,,
another tip
washing your car with dawn makes your car look great but breaks down the wax finish so if you use dawn on car be prepared to wax a lot...
that a extra..
good luck

when a homemade bug spray says use 'soap', it means SOAP,not DAWN.... the ingredients in Dawn, if the stuff is used too often or too heavily will KILL plants!!.... soap is gentle, like Ivory, FelsNaptha, baby shampoo or insecticidal soap.... the easiest way to have 'soap' on hand is to cut up a bar of Ivory and put it in water in a Mason jar and let it melt... us that in your sprays....
Dawn and any anti-bacterial liquid soaps are NOT GOOD FOR PLANTS.....
soap sprays are usually used for bugs like aphids and you have to spray the BUG to kill it... it doesn't work to just spray the leaves.... AND, since you need to use it several times to kill the next generation of aphid, and the next and the next, you'd better be sure that what you're using is safe for the plant!!!....
