Oh, DnD is a great game. It inspires imagination and creative thinking, along with cooperation and planning.
The problem is that it has heavy fantasy themes, and many people REALLY don't like that. The mentions of Demons, Devils, and Gods really set off some more religious people. And since a party would have a hard time surviving without a cleric, at least one person has to play a "religious" character.
There where also a number of rumors of people losing touch with reality and acting out their characters in real life, getting hurt or killed. Frankly, between TV, movies, and video games, if you haven't done something stupid like that, you probably won't in DnD.
Frankly, the first sounds like your problem. If your mother objects even to the fictional thought of other gods or magic, there isn't anything you're going to be able to do. If she does enough research she WILL find something that supports her views. You can explain that its just make-believe, improve acting with rules. Try promising not to play a magic user or religious class; but once again, if she is hard-lined enough, she will not care.
You need to do your own research, and hopefully come up with someone and something that is more authoritative than what she finds.

In my opinion, D&D games are very good RPG games, for reason in being the very well organized gameplay as well as the balanced set of skills and statistics. There is a lot that goes for making your character, and there really is no ''best''. In addition, D&D creates a various amount of weapons and armor to enliven the great graphics. When you say spiritualistic, there usually is a law system involved with the characters, say paladins need to be lawful good and have to follow a non-evil deity. There are stuff, a paladin can't do, however, and stoylines can change depending on dialogue and the characters you make in the beginning.
What I find unique about D&D games is their well built damage system with dice. Like most games, they have the usual ''burden'' depending on your strength and how much you carry, and how it affects your speed, distance of travel, and agility. Although the game is fantasy, it's very realistic when it comes to the system it's built on. Thus, I overall say it is a good game for PC gamers that are RPG-type, and it's well worth playing.

D&D isn't a bad game. Sure it has dragons and monsters and spells and witchcraft. But in the story of King Arthur they had all of that too..does she also think thats a bad story? My brother has played D&D for years. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Most people watch movies nowadays with worse stuff in it.
