You need to stop the problem at the source, not after it enters the water heater. The smell is in the cold water supply. You may be able to have a softener or filter installed to prevent this. The anode rod is a sacrificial (attracts minerals to it instead of the heater liner) rod and is usually made of magnesium. It is only there to protect the heater, not remove the smell.

You are talking about the "anode rod" used in most water heaters. It reacts with some of the minerals and chemicals in the water to remove them and prevent buildup of scale inside the heater. Sooner or later the rod gets caked with scale, and needs to be removed and cleaned so it can continue to do its work. I've never heard of it being used to remove a sulfur smell, however. Even if it could, it would only remove it from your hot water. I think you better talk to someone in the plumbing business who is more qualified than "the guy" who told you about the anode rod.

The word is "ANODE"!! This is a sacrificial rod in your water heater! It should be replaced if too "eaten". They're not real expensive, make the water smell better, and help your water heater last longer! ;-)=
