My observation of relatives indicates that many of the people who say they believe in a wonderful Heaven are not so sure deep down. My oldest sister insults me outrageously if I say anything that makes her doubt her silly beliefs. She sounds like a kindergarten brat in a "No, it isn't-Yes, it is!" debate about heaven and hell. I say there is no logical evidence that either exist, and she has no coherent argument that they do. Dying is still the "Great Unknown', even to believers.

Even humans that do not believe in the Christian idea of Heaven or Hell try to avoid dying; that is part of what we are. We have a strong desire to live, the same as that gazelle you see on the wild life shows that the leopard or whatever is after.

Don't forget that religion is man-made and the ones who gave forth on the laws of the god or gods were in positions of power. A promise of being forever punished for transgressions and forever rewarded for good deeds very likely was incorporated to keep the populous in line way back when.

Just because a person believes in life after death is no reason for them to give up the part of life they have on Earth, now is it?

I think people try to do everything to avoid dying is because no one is really sure what happens when you die, and when you don't know something you tend to be afraid of the unknown, and maybe because they've been a bad person all their life and they know when it is their time to go they wont have a great after life. I'm not sure if my answer is accurate but I think about that too. Some people are not afraid to die, all I know is when it is my time I hope I die peacefully and not a painful death like getting shot at or bleeding to death.

There are alot of reasons for that, most people just don't want to die at all, others don't know if they have done enough good in the world to go heaven because Heaven is not promised to anyone.Alot of people believe in Reincarnation and that would mean that you didn't go to heaven.

Because humans are greedy people and scared of the afterlife. Greedy humans want a full life on earth as well as eternity with their Lord God. The scared ones don't want to die becuase they don't truely believe in Heaven and are scared it doesn't exist as they pictured it...

Because they are not uncertain whether they can go Heaven or not. Fear of the unknown. You can really `visit' heaven or Hell through meditation.

In their fairy tale, people that commit suicide are not allowed to go to heaven. In older times, people who commit suicide, where interred by a civil service, in a corner of the unbaptized (het hoekje der ongedoopten). Alongside those that weren't baptized, also criminals and suicide 'victims' where interred there.

Death is rarely pleasant, regardless of what waits on the other side. It's like a kid pulling off a band-aid. He knows it'll feel better afterwards, but it still doesn't make him any less hesitant.
