Yes, it's annoying. Coffee is a big help. My oldest if 5 years old, so I've not had a decent nights' sleep in that amount of time. I'm the kind of person who does not fall back to sleep easilly. So, even if a child wakes from a nightmare and falls right back to sleep, I'm up for an hour or two. That's life as a parent. You get a bit of a break once your youngest is a few years old, at least until your oldest is a teenager. Then you'll be up at night again waiting for them to come home!

My kids sleep fine, BTW, but I have been consistently pregnant and/or breastfeeding and cosleeping for 5 years, so yeah, I'm tired. Now that everyone is in their own bed, I STILL don't get quite enough sleep. My youngest wakes up the second the sun comes up. My oldest can't fall asleep until it is dark outside. I can't wait for the longer nights of winter! I have learned to be assertive about demanding time to rest when my husband is home, and I also go to bed early. That means that I don't have the time in the evening to watch my favorite TV shows. Totally worth the sacrifice to be a bit more rested. I do make time to be intimate with my hubby a few times a week, but I normally get at least 2 hours of sleep before he comes to bed. The "benefits" of that time together more than outweigh the lost sleep, KWIM? I have been known, on utterly exhausted days, to call a friend. She'll come over and watch all of our kiddos while I sack out in my bedroom for an hour or two. I do the same for her. Friends and family can be a Godsend when you are tired. My kids had Vacation Bible School last week. I taught the first segment of the class, then I had 2 hours to myself. I used one hour to clean out my dungeon of a garage, and the other to sleep. It made a big difference. If I did not have a friend in the neighborhood, I would hire a trustworthy mother's helper a couple of days a week to supervise my children in my home while I caught up on sleep. When you are well rested, you are much more efficient throughout the day.

Parenting is all about sacrifice, but you should not have to sacrifice to the point that you are useless. If your sleep is completely shattered by an infant, you need to call in some help. If it's just a matter of wanting a few more minutes in the morning, suck it up and deal with it. Then, have a cup of coffee and get on with your day.

The problem is we sleep in 90 minute cycles. That's why if you wake up before your alarm and go back to sleep you are groggy. That 20 minutes is important to get through your sleep cycle. But if you must wake, you must... good luck!

Welcome to the life of a mommy! I always feel like I need 20 more minutes. You practically have to shoot caffiene into my veins to get that feeling to go away! And, sadly, I think we'll always want it and not get it back for a long time :)
