Good luck. I not sure you will find a free manual. I buy my manuals from the Dealers, most are "Clymer". You can look on places like;
http://www.amazon.com/Evinrude-Johnson-Outboard-Manual-48-235/dp/0892875550
Here it about $27 + shipping. Used
are about $25 + 3.99 shipping. A local dealer may be as cheap, all said and done.

I wouldn't use surface gap plug there either -- L77JC4 if you can find 'em, or if not use QL77JC4 (RFI suppressor plug). That's not the original recommended plug, but I don't know what was, but I'm pretty sure it's out of production. Inspect the flywheel for loose or cracked or otherwise damaged magnets. Measure the voltage on the purple wire while cranking -- must be at least 9 volts, otherwise you have a fault in the harness, keyswitch, starter or battery. Disconnect the coil from the amplifier, then unscrew the whole coil and wire assy out of the distributor cap. Remount the coil and reconnect to the amplifier with the wire coming out of the cap. Rig a spark tester with 1/2" gap off the end of the coil wire. Disconnect the wire between the amplifier and points, turn the key on and measure voltage at the amplifier -- should be 12V. If you get spark across your tester when you ground the points wire (from the amplifier), then the amplifier and coil are good. Just lightly brush the end of the wire against the engine block or other good ground. Connect spark testers gapped at about 1/2" to all three high tension leads coming off the distributor and align the rotor with #1. If you get spark on any but the #1 lead when you ground the points wire, the distributor cap is faulty. Retest with the rotor aligned to #2 then #3. When you get it running (yes I said "when"), measure the voltage across the battery at about 3500 rpm -- over 16V that will damage your ignition -- means you need a better battery. This system depends on the battery to suck up excess voltage, so get something like a group 27 interstate deepcycle.
