That can be from a few different causes such as hard water or a protien and fat build up in the tank. Both are harmless, but an indication it's time for a gravel cleaning and water change. Fee free to email me if I can help you further.

I had this problem when my betta was in a bowl. I now have him in the 5 gal tank like yours but this time I put 5 ember tetras with him. I think they help stir up the water and the film doesn't lay on top easy.

I don't know what the film is, but putting tetras in the tank helped.

good luck.

I have seen the same thing before and I'm not sure what it is or exactly where it comes from. I just dump the water and clean the bowl when I see it. It hasn't hurt or killed any of my bettas yet. I think it may come from uneaten or spit out food rotting in the bowl. One time when it did that I found a dead fly in the rocks when I cleaned it out. But whatever it is, its better to get rid of it.
