It's not a "power"" growl, it's more like a rattling, grumbly growl.
And it only makes this sound when it's in one or the other of these two gears. When I put it into neutral, the sound stops.
What causes this?

i would say the trans shifting fork or synchro for these gears is damaged, try putting a little pressure on the shifter in these gears and see if it goes away

I had an 85 GMC Jimmy that made a growling noise in 2nd gear. Aamco said if I had brought it to them before the transmission went, it would have been an inexpensive fix. I suggest you take it to Aamco (http://www.aamco.com/) and let them look at it. Apparently they have their share of consumer problems (http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/aamco.htm) so you may want to try America's Service Station. I've heard complaints about them too but I've never had a problem with them. Good luck.

I'm just guessing, but you may need a new clutch. I'm not completely sure though. If you know someone who's a mechanic, let them look at it and have them tell you what they think it is...they're usually right. Is it possible you're putting it into gear too fast?
