why can the rescue workers drill from the roof of the mine where the mine collaps up to the oppening on the other side send a remote control car equipt with light audio video and drive it in to see if they can see something ?

A. The shaft from the entry to the place where the miners were working collapsed.
B. The mine itself is inside a mountain. The "roof" is on the top of that mountain. This isn't like a lot of coal mines in the East where the mines are under flat ground like Pennsylvania.
