I personally do not even think about it. My husband and I both work and I have a 2 year old too. By the time we all get home and I start dinner... an apron is the last thing on my mind. We don't get home until after 6 and I an usually trying to get dinner ready soon after. We try not to eat really late so it puts a time squeeze in the kitchen for me. It is pretty much another step that I am ok with leaving out!

To pcbeachrat, Thanks for the apron link. (Loved it).
I have read answers that said , to inconvenient, in a hurry, old fashioned, women don't wear dresses anymore, etc. etc. Well I'm here to say yes I wear (only) dresses and skirts and I wear aprons all the time. I prefer to look like a 50's housewife, if that's the term. I don't like sweats and tees for housework or at all really. I can wear a nicely pressed dress for a couple of days as long as I have an apron on to keep it clean. I must admit I am a bit of an apron addict. I collect (and wear) vintage aprons, I have from plain to floral aprons, work aprons to frilly pinafore hostess aprons. I have an apron for all occasions. Aprons remind me of a time when women were valued for their domestic abilities and baking a cake did not start with "first open the packet cake mix".

Actually..aprons were primarily used to keep dust from flour, baking powders, etc from sifting it and all..Now days, hardly anyone bakes from scratch any more, the flour is presifted etc...Back then everyone didnt run to the store and buy pre made pies, biscuits on and on..An apron wasnt really designed to use for all cooking...The hazords of baking and flour flying around was it's main purpose.
The origin of funny aprons and novelty aprons.
Before today people didn't have the luxury of owning extensive wardrobes and washing of clothing was not done on a frequent basis. Even in the 1940's and 1950's many folks used wringer washers, hung clothing on the line to dry, and every piece had to be ironed. Permanent press had not yet been invented, and although cotton jersey was available, most children and ladies wore woven cotton housedresses and play dresses. Shorts, tops, and slacks were reserved for beach, vacation or special occasions, and only for the most modern of ladies. Aprons in the past and today, including funny aprons, i.e.; what part of party funny apron, served a practical purpose. They covered up the dress underneath and protected it from soiling, and made washing easier - you could wash the apron every couple of days, but wore the dress underneath 4-5 days or a week. As well as being practical, they were funny. Novelty aprons can be printed with many different messages, i.e.; real cool grandma aprons. Housewives, school teachers, children, shop-keepers, even secretaries all wore various styles of aprons over their clothing daily.

I don't know but we should start. My husband hates it when I walk around the house in short cut-off jeans and an old halter top when I clean. He hates it even more that I don't cook and I make him take me out to martinis and sushi all the time. He says, "Why don't you put your hair up in curlers and put on an apron instead of flouncing around showing off your legs and midrif. It's downright disgusting."
So, I think I will find an apron. Now, should I get one from Walmart or Nordstom?

because nowadays the cleaning and cooking in an average house is much less work than it used to be. there are now dishwashers, washing machines, microwaves, etc, therefore the mess is much less, cutting back the use of the apron. i happen to wear an apron cuz i dont have a dishwasher, and i dont want to get wet.

(Apron strings are no longer, aside from the ones that have you in your mom's house right now.)
Because the clothes they're wearing are easy to clean - and durable... more so, than the 50's imaginary image you have (when they wore "house-dressses"). People do as they see done -- and how many aprons are you seeing on TV, aside from kitchen reality TV? Even the Food Network has chicks showing more cleavage & boobs, then worrying about cooking stains.
P.S. -- Men also cook & clean. Look into it.

Why ? Because what's the point in protecting clothing that gets tossed into the washing machine at the end anyway .Aprons are a symbol of exaggerated domestic slavery . No women in her right mind wants to look like that .Burn all aprons ! LOL

I worked in a pro kitchen for years and of course we always wore aprons. i saved many pairs of pants that way. its another layer between you and boiling water. a good heavy apron will soak up splashes of oil or any other stuff. Plus if its long enough, it doubles as a potholder. I always wear one.
also, i've heard (and seen) men wear them too, you should give it a try

People used to not have so many clothes so they needed to protect their clothes from stains. I don't know if the pictures are true, but it also seemed that women typically wore very pretty house dresses in the fifties, so maybe that was another reason...today, people have bummy clothes to change into for hard house work. Also, housework is easier with all our appliances and such, so you don't get so dirty from it.
