I am 35 weeks pregnant planning on going on birth control as soon as possible after this baby comes. I plan on breastfeeding and was concidering a IUD as they last 5 years and you dont have to remember a pill everyday. I know they are expensive but does anyone know of any way to get one for cheaper such as a free trial or coupon for money off? I really dont want Irish twins! LOL. Thank you.
OH!! Other forms of BC that are great for breastfeeding mothers please let me know!!!!

I am in Canada and i know Mirena costs 325 dollars. I dont have insurance because you dont need it here. And the IUD is estrogen free. So any other suggestions would be wonderful!!

Mine was covered by insurance. But I believe most IUDs are between $200-$500.

If you don't have insurance or they will not cover it then ask your doctor or midwife if your hospital has a program that helps with covering birth control. Our hospital has a program to help with long term birth control such as IUDs, Depo shots, and tubal ligations/vasectomies.

You could also try Planned parenthood or a crises pregnancy center if they don't do it they may know of other resources in your local area.

I used a regular birth control pill while nursing...it did not affect any of my 4 children and did not cause my milk to "dry up".

Good Luck!

Any birth control containing estrogen can dry up your milk. Check with your local health department to see if they offer IUDs. Some health departments charge on a sliding scale and some do not require payment at all. Condoms are also a good option if your partner is reliable. There is only one pill offered to breast feeding mothers called the mini pill but I do have a friend with irish twins while on it. My doctor said it is reliable as long as you are still breast feeding, my friend stopped breast feeding but didn't change birth controls right away and got pregnant during this time.

Breastfeeding is an effective form of birth control all by itself if done properly. It is called "ecological breastfeeding" and means you let the baby nurse on demand throughout the day and night. This stimulation keeps you from ovulating and can work for up to 24 months.

For centuries this was "nature's form of birth control" and it was very effective. Why take pills? The estrogen can cause your milk to dry up and IUD's and other hormones have very unpleasant side effects.

yeah i was going to say insurance will prolly cover it. I'm looking into getting one too but not sure yet.. I'm sure if you did some research into the companies you might be able to find a way to cut costs if you dont have insurance or they wont cover it.
