Rob Zombie - the director - says it's not really a remake, and the first 2/3 of the movie are totally different from the first Halloween. In a way, it's a remake, but mostly not.

Halloween is a remake of the 1978 film of the same name. The film was written, produced and directed by Rob Zombie, and is scheduled to be released in the United States of America (U.S.) and Canada on August 31, 2007, and an October, 2007 release internationally. The film will star Malcolm McDowell, Sheri Moon Zombie, Tyler Mane, Brad Dourif, Danielle Harris and several unknowns in other roles, including Daeg Faerch and Scout Taylor-Compton.
Reports indicate that the film will not be a straight remake of the 1978 original, but rather an updated re-imagining.

Word is that it is indeed a remake, with Malcolm McDowell (Clockwork Orange) as Professor Loomis. Same premise, i.e. the beginnings of Michael Myers.

This movie is a prequel. It is going to show how Michael Myers becomes the Killer he is. God I hope JLC isn't in it. Rob Zombie is making the movies so you know it will be good.
