the original idea was no
and it is centuries old

however, gold from the refinery is now sold in terms of assayed 'fineness' with calcualtions carried out to one part in one thousand. .999 fine gold is the best that can be bought.

this offers jewelers an opportunity to strengthen the 'gold' they sell as 24 carat ... alloying it with one part in 50 of other metals may improve its wear qualities. That would be .98 fine gold but would still round to 24 carat.

not being in the jewelry business, i do not know exactly how this situation is treated ... and I'd suspect it is treated in favor fo the jeweler and the '24 carat' gold being offered for sale is actually .98 fine.

:-)

No. A volume of gold is divided into 24 parts. If all 24 parts are gold then it is 24 karat (pure gold). If 18 parts gold and 6 parts another metal like silver, nickel, etc...it is 18 karat gold, and so forth
