hes bored try putting those likit chews in his stall and a jolly ball or something, also make sure you leave the window part open so he can watch whats going on and ppl will probably come by and pet him so hell have some attention
if he keeps doing it then maybe hang the bucket on the outside of his door so he has to stick his head out and drink or hang the bucket up higher so he cant get his butt on it
good luck!!!!!!!

I rubbed a filly at the track who had a similar habit. In the AM I would have her tacked & ready to go for the exercise rider and she would back up, crap in her water bucket then dunk her whole tail in it. Talk about no class lol. Even if I tied her to the front of the stall she'd bend around & aim. I ended up having to pull the bucket each time I tied her for any length of time. Other than her I've only seen it done by a couple others (on a regular basis) and the only thing to do is hang it outside the stall where they can still reach it to drink.

LOL My mare crapped in the water bucket a few days ago and a friend of mine with no horse knowledge what so ever freaked out about it. Saying how disgusting it was and couldn't believe that she did that. I had to laugh and tell her that she needs to be around horses more often that it happens more then you think. Usually it begins with rubbing there butt and oops, I got to poop, and theres the surprise the next day. Alot of horses like to sit on there buckets or feed tubs. What can you do about it? Really nothing but keep it clean. They are animals, not people. Like the other reply said, give him two water buckets.

He's making a statement. It has to do with boredom, a small space and an interesting feeling back there. You may want to try hanging the bucket a bit higher if you can... high enough he can't squeeze it with his butt, but he can drink from it. Otherwise, you are just going to have to police this bucket to keep it clean. You could also try a softer bucket that will just collapse and squirt his heinie with water when he sits on it.. Horses can get some really weird ideas when given a three day show and nothing much to do.

Give him something to distract him - a lickit or something like that and 2 water buckets- one on each side of the stall.
I think you may find that hanging the bucket up is just more of a challenge - mine has managed to crap in an automatic waterer !

where i board, horses do that. the only thing that you can do is try to move the bucket up so it is to high for him to poop in, but he can still drink out of it. you could offer him a second bucket, but he could just want to poop in it too.

somehow you have to put the bucket up higher and possible have a bar around it so the horse can still reach it but when the horse has it rear to it stays far enough away from it.

Well, I don't know. Put his water bucket where he can't reach it. Maybe you could get a different kind of water bucket.

He seems to be saving you a lot of work cleaning up. Give him another bucket so he'll have one to poop in and one to drink from.
