Confounding? I am surprised that anyone would pick either side to believe when it comes to the media or military leadership. Being specific on leadership here, for those that know and hear what is said from soldiers, believe what they have seen but don't let that take away from any other scenarios. First, the link from Islam Delenda Est pretty much tells it all for the media. Second, how many of our commanders are being removed from their positions or relocated due to the inability to finish this whole ordeal. The people in Iraq want us there to some extent, most do at least until their own country can get a handle on the situation. It is the other Middle Eastern countries that fear what could be. Imagine what the people of those countries would see and the possibilities of civil war throughout the Arab world, this is only one possibility among many. Then look at our own military and government, the officers are under pressure to complete the "mission". If they report failure, how many will get their rank, the awards, or anything else that is given out to them like candy when the deploy. So the media lies, the military lies, and both do it for their own personal gain without ethics. How many of us ever admit to failure without trying to blame someone else? We need to stop choosing a side to believe and learn to seek the truth rather than let them feed us something and expect us to believe them.

The military is the one who reports military deaths and causualties to the media, also I've seen many positive reports about progress in Iraq.

I believe the soldiers that report back to us (3 of my cousins are there) because they are there and they themselves are putting their asses on the line. Why would they be willing to do that if they didnt think they were making a difference? Like it or not, journalists and the companies they work for have their own agendas about the war.

Because the "journalists" spend most of their time hiding in their hotels in the green zone writing their book, and the military is in the streets.
Bad news sells, good news doesn't. Journalists have an economic incentive to slant the news.

I have found that, with all other things, the truth is somewhere in the middle.
An intelligent person would be looking at both, listening to both, and believing neither.

If you don't think the media has an agenda then you are kidding yourself. My guess is the truth lies somewhere in between.

Seeing as 95% of "journalists" are self proclaimed Liberals, it seems that they are the ones propigating the propaganda.
