Don't let the cutting dry out. You can soak the cutting in water with a willow branch to see if it grows roots. If it does, then plant it in good potting soil. It's best to shield the cutting from the hot afternoon sun. Bright light, but not direct sunlight, is ideal when the cutting is getting established.

OR...If your stem starts to root, stick it in a flower pot with potting soil & place a clear, thin plastic bag up over the pot and cutting, twist shut at the top & tie with a rubber band. A stick or clipped wire clothes hanger in the pot higher than the cuttings keeps the bag from collapsing down around the plant material. This will keep humidity constant inside the bag, while the cuttings are growing roots.

OR...After the cutting roots, you can place a large glass jar over the cutting planted in the flower bed to keep the plants humid while getting established. Make sure that direct sun does not overheat the contents of the jar.http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/southerngarden/roseprop.html
Good luck! Hope this helps.

transfer it to a pot filled with peat material and keep it moist but not wet. Roses are hard to grow so dont over water it. Keep it in a bright but not sunny spot adn see what happens. Good luck to you.

Only if there are roots starting to form. I would wait before there is a few roots then put it in soil. I have found the roots grow much faster in soil than water once they appear.
