I left work early Sat because my son is sick. I called in Sun because of it. Im taking him to the doctor today. He is also teething :(. My supervisor just called me this morning while i was getting ourselves ready. She told me that i was fired because that i didnt work yesterday. Remind u that my son is sick. I've only called in twice b4 this. The first time was because my son had pink eye and i had to take him to the ER because his fever was 102 and he was 3 months then. 2wks later i called in because i had caught pink eye and i was out of work with a doc excuse for 2wks. Am i in the wrong to get mad at them for firing me. Ive bought excuses to work for the call ins and i was gonna bring in the excuse to prove to them that he is sick. My supervisor and i dnt get along at all because of my call-ins. I barely call in unless i am sick or my son is sick. The worked that i was doing was working with Mentally & Physically illl clients in a group home. I had no problems wit the clients.

Last weekend one of them had an medical incident and i did everything by the rules. I even called the EMS to come. The client wanted to commit suicide so thats y i called the EMS for back up. I called HelpLine and the lady who takes care of incidents like this. My supervisor wrote me up because i did call the EMS. Im the person when it comes to these types of situations that I do what i think is best. Ive never been in an incident like this b4 so i did what i thought was best just incase the client did go thru with what she said she wanted to do. Was I wrong also for calling the EMS. If i didnt call the women who takes care of these situation i wouldve gotten in trouble. Should i call the state board or just let it slide?

I've been in your shoes EXACTLY ! I worked in a group home for MRDD adults and a client was having severe behaviors, acting out at staff with a knife so I called the police and they arrested the client.. Anyway, I think you did the right thing and should NOT be getting fired.. FYI you can't be fired over the phone.. There's a certain protocol that needs to be followed by your human resources personal in regards to firing an employee.. There needs to be a meeting with a neutral third party documenting the "firing" and you get a right to speak your mind and contest the firing.. I would get together all your sick time excuses/and documentation(s) and call for a mtg with the human resources personal.. Go over everything with them and see what they say... If they still don't "hire" you back then immeadiately file for unemployment and if you get denied then send a letter stating that you have reason to call the "board"... good luck

The problem was not your attitude or competence, but your availability. In institutions like these, the state mandates a certain minimum level of staffing, and substitutes must be called in or other accomodations made if someone can't be there.
They would probably prefer to not hire anyone with kids, especially single parents, because kids tend to get sick at inopportune times. But they're not permitted to practice such discrimination. About the best they can do is to ask if your kids have a tendency to get sick a lot, and then hire you, and then, when you've been out too many times, fire you. It's inconvenient and painful for everyone, but that's the sort of business it is.
Unfortunately, the medical excuses you bring in are perfectly legitimate, but these do not solve the home's staffing problems: you have to be there, boots on the ground, or the institution and its clients aren't being properly served.
Unfortunately, there aren't too many jobs where you get unlimited medical leaves. Perhaps the best strategy would be to come up with a cooperative kid-wrangling arrangement with another person with kids a job with hours different from yours.

the problem was is that u missed to much work days. Pink eye does not take 2 wks to get rid of. What u should have done was showed up to work with the pink eye and then let ur supervisor tell u to go home. I've had pink eye before and I did the same thing and my supervisor told me to go home. When u do it that way it shows that u made an effort to try to come to work at least.

God works in strange ways. Maybe this is his way of telling you that it is time for a change and that you need to be working somewhere else. I wish you the best of luck in all you do.

Go to her supervisor, if there is one, and voice your grievance. If there is no one over her, go to local unemployment office and file for unemployment and explain to caseworker situation.
God be with you.
