Actually, about a month ago, a young Marine and his wife pulled up to the pump behind my motorcycle. I went over and shook his hand, stepped back and saluted him (I'm retired Navy), and said, "Marine, thank you for serving our country. I am very proud of you and your fellow Marines. Please allow me to pay for your gas." I put my gas card in the slot and told him to fill up. No brag, just fact. Every time I show my ID card to a military guard at the gate at the Norfolk Naval Base, I always thank them for serving our country. I was in McD's on base and 2 U.S. Marines were just finishing up eating with a young lady (wife, girlfriend of one of them?). I saluted them both and thanked them for their service to our country. A friend of mine at church is a retired U.S. Marine Captain, Viet Nam combat vet. Sunday, I said, "Ben, I've never said this to you, my warrior brother," saluted him and said, "welcome home!" His eyes got wet, he hugged me and said, "Thank you my brother."
I read not long ago when a couple of young sailors just back from the gulf were at the Outback Steakhouse and when it came time to get their check, the waitress said that the couple behind them (now gone) had already paid for their meal..and a desert.
We all should show honor and our respect to ALL our military...active duty, past and retired. You don't have to pay for their meals or buy their gas. Just let them know they are appreciated. How about that old guy down the street...the Korean War Vet or the guy behind you, the Viet Nam vet. Or that retired Nurse..was she in the military as a Nurse? Being in the east coast Navy town, it's easy to come across our men and women in uniform. I thank them when ever I get the chance.

I would take the money but pay for the gas myself. I would want to make sure that I didn't accidentally intercept a top secret CIA encrypted message or something like that.

Money's really tight this week. My two youngest (daughters 4 & 5) start school on Wednesday. Daughter #2 heads back to her senior year in college. Daughter #3 heads down to Kentucky for her freshman year in college. I'd say "Thanks and God bless you. You are an answer to prayer!"
