We have recently bought our first home which is quite old and needs a bit of work to make it liveable (due to the previous occupants being smokers and also they must of been high when they decorated lol)
On the outside wall next to the front door they painted the house number with what looks like normal white paint (emulsion?) This looks terrible and is so big a nice number plaque will not cover it.
My question is, is there any cheap and efficient way of removing this paint without risk of it smearing and looking worse? I don't fancy having to buy expensive chemicals in large amounts for a one off job.

All the bricks were not painted.
They just painted a big white number on the front of the house which looks dreadful and we would like to get rid of it.

No offence but the last thing i want to do is paint the outside bricks white. Think I'l go with water and scrubbing if no other answers suggest otherwise.

sandblasting in no good for such a small area and its about £350 / day !

It's liklely to be gloss. i would wirebrush or try a wire wheel in an electric drill. That, a bit of elbow grease and some decent music on your MP3 player will have it sorted in an hour.

So long as its been there more than a couple of months it will not smear - all the oil will have evaporated.

wash down with water afterwards.

If your house is old & has its exterior brick painted, it probably was done with lead paint & will need to be removed by professionals who are trained in HAZMAT removal.

Sandblasting should not be done. It ruins the brick & makes it susceptible to water (and possibly insect) invasion.

Professionals will chemically remove the paint & then take the the residue to a toxic waste disposal location. BTW, this isn't cheap.

Other than stripping it..simply take a small chip of the brick to the paint store..and have the colour matched..then paint the marked bricks to match the house... make sure to get a flat latex paint..don't want no gloss for the brick is a flat finish

a good jetwash will do the trick ...if it,s gloss paint, nitromors will bring it off but it reeks and is messy , a very rough grade sanding may also work but it it may leave a clean looking patch :-)
