There are several forms of government each has it's pros and cons.
America is a Constitutional republic and is different from Canada which is a Parliamentary republic, yet also a Constitutional monarchy. China is also a republic but Socialist republic.
Republic and democracy are completely different things.

The advantage: we have a system in the US whereby elected officials presumably represent the people and make laws that everyone presumably lives by.
The disadvantage: We don't have much control over our elected officials.

The possibility of a Dictatorship. Advantage is accountability.
