The old same-sex marriage debate rears it's ugly head yet again.
Look, a lot of people are against it. I'm not entirely sure why. I'm told God forbids it. Well, God can go **** himself. Twice, with an iron stick. So can all those closed-minded religious zealots who walk around with their religious heads up their religious arses, preaching what we should practise, yet not practising what they preach.
But that's beside the point.
Your question asks whether I think gay-marriage should be legalised, yet the rest of your text presents a personal dilemma, and asks us, people you don't even know, whether we think you should marry your boyfriend.
First things first: yes, same-sex marriage should be legalised. Equal rights. Freedom. And, if you really feel that a piece of paper telling everyone that you're married is important to the success and happiness of your future together, then sure, marry away.
I don't believe our government will pass any such piece of legislation in the near future. If you're really set on getting married, then Canada, the UK and some of the USA allow gay marriage.
But, would it really be worth it? Would it be worth all that time, money and effort to go overseas and get married, just to return to Australia where it won't be recognised?
Your family and friends will recognise it (I hope). The government and society as a whole probaly won't.
My Uncle married a man. They went overseas, had a lovely ceremony, and tied the proverbial knot. After the wedding and honeymoon, they returned to Australia, where their vows meant little, except to them and their family. When other gays find out they're married, they're surprised. Then they get over it.
But, at the end of they day, I suppose it matters most to them. They did it because they love each other. Love knows no boundaries. It doesn't discriminate. Unfortunately, society does.
Essentially, all you need to do is answer this question: will getting married make me love my partner more?
Good luck to both you and your partner.
I hope you find an eternity of happiness whichever path you take.

I do believe it should be legalized as well because I have a beautiful girlfriend, who I would also like to marry and have a family with. I too would like to have the same rights as every other American! If the preacher of a church is willing to perform and bless the marriage, then I think the government should recognize it as a legal marriage. And a civil union is not something I am willing to settle for either... that's just the governments way of having their control over it. I guess if I really had to I would go to Canada to marry my honey!

Nothing says you can't say the vows in front of a minister and your friends. That's the important part of marriage, the vows.
As far as the legalities are concerned, there isn't much you can do except vote for open minded candidates that support your cause and try to set an example in the community of how two people of any sex can have a strong life-time commitment to each other.

Hi CB, first thing, it is great that it is not legal. Do you know what you do is disgusting and filthy, but God loves you so thats one bonus.
second thing. Do you really want to be with another man for the rest of your life, or do you just think you do.
thirdly. Do you want to have children one day?? How are you going to do that?
fourthly. I feel sorry 4 any children that may be granted to be adopted by you and your um..friend in the future.
fifthly. No wonder there is so much family breakdown these days, kids grow up to be confused.
sixthly. Read the bible mate, it may help you in this area.
Cheers. God bless you.

I think it should be legal. Keep fighting for your rights. You'll have to settle for a civil union which is now legal in California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire (effective January 1, 2008), New Jersey, Oregon (effective January 1, 2008), Vermont, Washington state, and the District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.). Good luck :)

I don't think same sex marriage should be legalized, that was not GOD's intent. if the two of you want to be together as if married, legally change your name to his or vise-versa. change things legally in the eyes of the law. and by the way I don't think you have to go to Canada for same sex marriage. I do believe you can do it here somewhere in USA.

i don't really know what to do in this situation. i have to say though, i'm confused as to why same sex marriages aren't legal. i'm not much into laws and such but is it written somewhere that married couples must be male/female? seriously.

There are ways of getting many of the legal benefits of marriage even though your country is full of evil biggots. Talk with a lawyer.
