The simplest fraction is 1/2 and if you subtract that from 1, the result is 1/2. And since you want only two fractions to total 1, you cannot have only one fraction to equal to 1/2 and still be the simplest fraction. 2/4, 3/6, 4/8 etc. are not simple fractions and are simply multiples of 1/2.

You can have simple fractions with different numerators which total 1, like 1/10 and 9/10
