YES, even more. It depends on up to what size you could afford to buy. But if you just want more space from a 40Gb drive, use compression.

yes you can. You can either add another 40 GB hard drive if you have a spare port/bay or replace your 40 GB HDD with one that has an 80GB capacity if you don't have a spare port/bay. Be sure though to check the specs, there is Serial ATA(1&2)- faster - and the good old Parallel ATA -acceptable- types, both of which most probably can be supported by your system if its not that old. If its old you will just be able to use the Parallel ATA.

you could replace the existing 40GB hard disk with another 80GB hard disk , or you could install a second 40 GB hard disk and leave the previous 40GB hard disk installed, that way you will have 80GBs but you will be forced to have alteast 2 partitions of 40GB each.

Assuming that 40 gig is the full of size of the hard drive, you can only increase it by adding an additional drive, or replacing the current one with a larger drive.
If your current hard drive is larger then 40 gig, but is divided into two (or more) sections with one being 40 gig, then there is software which will let you join the different sections back into one larger section. My favorite is Partition Magic. However, it will lost a files stored on the second of the two sections you joint together.

You can only do that by replacing the hard drive, and getting a new one of 80 GB.
