Yes i live in north England and was around at 2 am (don't like sleep). Watched for about 30 Min's and saw a dozen or so. Some were spectacular, some not so. They were virtually straight up from east to west. Will be on the look out again tonight. The leonaides storm about three years ago was also supposed to be spectacular and i saw only one.
I think most astronomers are easily excited. However Patric Moore et al were having a party and i think that would be the best way, out your tree staring at the stars with a bunch of mates would probably be worth doing.

I saw about a dozen meteors (not meteorites, btw - those are the ones which hit the ground, rather than burning up in the atmosphere, as meteors do). It wasn't what you could reasonably call spectacular.

I looked out for about half an hour from midnight and saw nothing despite it being a clear sky. Would of stayed up longer but I have work at 6:00am.

I didn't. It was nice and clear in my part of Essed. I looked towards the East about 3 am and saw nothing.
