If so how well?
Who taught you?
Are you male/female?
does it annoy you when other people cannot cook the most basic things?
Do you think all children should be taught to cook instead of living on processed junk?

Me, my mum taught me, I was cooking meals for a family of 6 while she was at work from about age 12 I think, and I don't resent that at all cos now I love to cook and in our house we eat home cooked food 95% of the time even though both my partner and I work full time.

I have been cooking various things as long as I can remember, My mother and her mother both use to sit me on the counter to watch when they cooked and I would help out, Mam asked be to make custard when I was 7 or 8 and they was the first thing I had cooked solo, I burnt it but no-one minded. I took over the cooking for all of us when I was 18/19 and Mam was working full time. I think I cook fairly well (better than alot of people I've met though and not as well as a handful), my pastry and cakes are said to be the best in the family so it's not surprising that I have been baking most of my life with minimal supervision.

It does annoy me that people say they can't cook, but then again most don't even try, but it is too easy to get a ready meal or take out now that people don't try. I don't know what children get taught else where but in my area of the UK cookery is compulsory from 11-14 (first 3 years of secondary school), along with sawing and wood/plastic/metal work. I loved all 3 of these subjects and regally aced them but I was brought up to cook and saw, plus I was taught to do some DIY was a child, which may seem strange as I'm female but atleast I am confident with a power tool in my hand. I wish more children had my up brining as being able to cook is a useful skill. I don't think I realised how useful until I went to uni and had flat mates that could barely cook. If real food was cheaper than the processed junk more youngsters might eat real food, especially if they were taught how to cook it. Unfortunately here we are no longer training cookery teachers, at my brothers school cookery lessons are taken by a carpenter (he's a woodwork teacher now but has no cookery experience) and a classroom assistant (who grew up cooking at home).

Yes I do cook but not that well, I have leaned many tricks from my sister who has to be the best cook in our family. My sister Amanda taught me but my mom also has given me some tip on how to substitute things or make them healthier. I am a female. It annoys me so much when other people can not cook the most basic things. I do think that all children should learn how to cook because then it teaches responsibility and the children can bond with there parents. It also broadens there horizons.

I'm male and I love cooking. I worked in restaurants from the age of 15-22. Worked with chefs in hotels. Worked with alot of good cooks. My mom was a great cook. About one saturday a month I'll sit around and watch foodtv or some cooking shows just for some new ideas.

All the pans I cook with I bought at the restaurant supply store, not at target. I think everyone should own a le creuset pot. My gf is chinese and didn't know how to make rice in the rice steamer, I thought that was somewhat annoying. I never heard of a chinese not being able to make rice, I was dumbfounded. Hehehe. So I taught her. Of course she didn't listen to me and does it her way, but its okay, shes actually a good little cook.

Yeah, I think kids should pay more attention to their mothers when they cook so they can learn some things. Instead of eating mcdonalds happy meals.

I cook most of the meals for my wife and I. I by in large decided I could cook and just went for it, though a big help was my vegan ex who knows what it is like to cook every meal she consumes. It is not annoying when someone honest to goodness can't cook, but it is far more bothersome when they think that it save time to eat out all too often. Families lack that. I have been teaching my 13 yo nephew to do the basics and it is so nice to be able to help him grow to follow a better role than what seems to be the norm these days.

Yes I can cook.

Very well.

Well...my mom sort of taught me. I learned mostly from watching cooking shows which I have been interested in since I was a child. You would be surprised how much you can learn from cooking shows!

I am a female.

It doesn't annoy me...it just means that they have never really had to do it. They are just un-trained in that area.

Fact of the matter is...kids are VERY picky. It seems the consensus that most kids don't eat homemade food most of the time. When you are looking for something like hot dogs or mac and cheese for picky kids buy the best quality you can...all natural, organic, low salt. All of these are OK. It is more important to get kids into fruits and veggies very young...then work on the meatloaf. :)

My child cooks with me all of the time. She is 5. While she is interested in 'creating' with me...she rarely eats what she makes with me. :) (unless its something really tasty like cup-cakes) LOL In fact her experience in this area surprised her pre-k teacher. The kids had a day were they were introduced to 'cooking' and 'measuring'. My daughter was the ONLY ONE who knew how to do it all. I think its sad that out of all those kids, my child was the only one exposed to cooking skills. :(

I'm a fella, I can cook. My mum taught me the basics as soon as I could stand on a chair and reach the worktop. Then I got lazy for about 20 years, then I got a divorce and Delia Smith came to the rescue. Now I experiment quite a bit. Am remarried and we share it - now have a bigger kitchen and we can actually cook together without committing murder!

Cooking is a part of family life that has gone the route of the tramway, it is almost extinct in most american homes.

I know how to cook and I love it as it also helps bring back fond memories of growing up, when I was a kid we never had junk food in the house well almost never.

I consider myself to be an excellent cook! Nobody really taught me. Sometimes my mum showed me a thing or two, but over the years I picked it up on my own!

I believe that anyone who can read can cook. It's just a matter if they want to or not.

That's incredible that you cooked for your family at age 12! Kudos!
