Recently bought an old oscillating fan. It puts out so much more cool air than the new ones that are smaller or bigger. This I assume is because the companies have to make fans safer and the cages don't allow for air flow.
I have never known of anyone who got a finger, hand etc injured in a fan. Do you? Was it an old one or a new one?

It is in this category because Senior citizens will remember using these. Duh!

We bought it cause it looks cool. I love vintage items. I put it in the kitchen and turn it on occasionally when I am cooking a big meal. Lots of cooking and hot flashes do not go together well.

The main difference is that people are more energy conscious now than they used to be. Back in the day all the companies were worried about was producing products that worked well. Now they have to worry about producing products that still work to do what they say they will, but that use less power doing it. This is why your old fan can work so much better than new ones...they don't have those energy restrictions on them.

If you pay a lot for your own hydro, I would suggest making sure you use this fan only when you really need it. Otherwise your increased power usage may not be a good trade-off for the "efficiency" of this old fan.

The main reason is your observation that the old fan's have very little restriction in the blade shroud. And yes I have heard the awful 'THUNK' when a finger interferes with blade rotation. It can cause separation if it hits a knuckle just right otherwise it knocks the finger out generally leaving a small cut and bruise.

The old motors were often rewound by hand. Today's motors are more compact and much more efficient. (They have a higher power factor, PF, meaning develop more usable horsepower with less loss due to friction etc.)

Reproduction table and floor fans, with brass cage and blades, are still made in Thailand.

Thanks for the memories,

Old fans are willing to do things that are more traditional. New fans are willing and urging to do new things.
