i'm visiting the USA in a couple of day's time for research, and my mobile phone (apparently) will work over there. the problem is, i need to know what my number will be so i can give it to people i'm meeting with.

e.g. a standard phone number in the UK might be something like 07816 877 506

what would that become if i used it in the states?

Forget using your UK phone in the US. Can you imagine what your roaming charges will be?

Go into any WalMart, Best Buy, Circuit City or simular store and purchase a disposable phone, use it while you're in the states and throw it away when you leave. This way, you will have a USA phone number to pass out.

For a spare phone, I purchased a GoPhone from AT&T for $20. I purchased enough minutes to last me a year for $100. You may purchase any number of minutes from $10 to $100. The rate are $0.10 per minute on the plan I got. There is no contract, you are not tied in for a long run. There are many other phone systems like this, even Virgin.

Good luck and enjoy your trip to the states.

As previously mentioned, your number will remain the same, except people will need to know your country code. But here are some tips.

What do I need to do to roam internationally?

For minimal to moderate airtime users, Dr Wireless recommends roaming with your local wireless service provider. The benefits are simplicity. Anyone calling your local 7 digit mobile number will be routed to your overseas destination without even knowing you are out of the country. While this is the easiest scenario, it is not the best for heavy users. (see below)

1) Make sure you have a GSM phone that is world capable. AT&T Wireless TDMA and Verizon Wireless CDMA and SprintPCS TriBands will not work overseas. GSM only!

2) Make sure to contact your wireless service provider and request they enable international roaming and international long distance. It is not enough to just purchase a world phone.

3) Double check this has been done! We occassionally find that the carriers may enable only international long distance and not international roaming which will do you no good.

4) It's also a good idea to have a list of the country codes you plan to call as well as the name of the overseas carrier your local carrier uses for roaming.

5) Most phones automatically search for the proper GSM frequency but not always. Turn your phone off, then on and cross your fingers! If your phone does not automatically select the appropriate carrier, it may be necessary to manually select the appropriate frequency and carrier if there are more than one roaming partners in the market you are visiting.

6) Make sure you have the proper plug adapters to charge your phone. Most world phones are compatible with 110/220volts but they don't always include the proper charging adapter for the country you are visiting.

Even though the phone is in the US it will still be registered in the UK, so someone phoning from the UK would use your number as usual, someone phoning from the US would need to phone the UK code (+44) before dialing your number without the zero. You however will need to use the UK code when phoning the UK. Hope that's not too confusing.
