Postal Index Number (PIN) or Zip code is a 6 digit code. There are 8 PIN regions in India. Understanding how PIN Code works is simple if you understand the following: The first two digits of the PIN Code together indicates the sub region or one of the postal circles. The first three digits of the PIN Code together indicates a sorting / revenue district. The last three digits of the PIN Code refer to the delivery Post Office.

There are 3 types of codes in India. 1. Country code '91'. Its used for accessing India through phone from outside India. 2. Area code. It is for adding to country code to access the city or town you want to call.(11,22,44,33,44,4652,1616etc) 3. Postal PIN code(USA and other countries call this as ZIP code). This is a six digit code used to deliver your post to the correct city or town, even if you make mistake in the spelling of the city/town

Zip code is the abbreviated form for Zonal Improvement Plan. it is used in America. it applies to the states of the United States of America. it does not apply to India. India adopted PIN code system i.e., postal index number. Now there are 8 such zones in India.
