It doesn't matter if your motherboard is only capable of single channel memory mode.
Otherwise dual channel memory mode is best and it can only be possible when you have a matched pair of ram like 2x512Mb of the same type/model.

First of all it is an FSB not FSD - secondly you don't mention the speed of the RAM thirdly (and most importantly) not all MB can accept a single DIMM so for some MB this is a moot point.
There should be zero performance difference on a MB that can accept single DIMMs assuming that the speed is the same - but you may find that two DIMMs is cheaper to buy
The restriction here is the memory bus - it can handle commands only as quick as it can - regardless of whether it is dual or single channel the amount of data throughput is unaffected by the amount of sticks the memory is on.

I believe the only advantage you will have by installing 1 1024 MB RAM, is you will have 1 slot available, for later upgrade.

With two RAM modules the CPU will have to deal with swapping data among them, but with one RAM module, that problem is eliminated, but even with the swapping going on with two RAM modules, the computer's average speed does NOT get affected. An average gamer or computer user will never know the difference. Unless you are writing programs for NASA on this computer, it doesn't matter.
You might also need to check if you motherboard supports a 1 gig RAM module per slot, old mother boards allow it, so unless you computer is super old you don't need to worry about this issue.

the 1024 is better, one you can come back and add more ram later if need be and two it's only one part and if the data is stored on the bus closest to the cpu then it has that less far to travel down the system bus at a slower speed

you will possibly be suited. to objective your RAM sticks, get rid of the previous one and pass the hot one to the 1st RAM slot and boot your workstation. in case you notice all 512MB, the hot stick is okay. Then, upload the unique RAM save on with the 2nd slot and boot. in case you in straight forward terms get 768MB of RAM, it would desire to be that RAM sticks are not like minded with one yet another. return the hot stick and attempt to purchase extra RAM that fits the kind call of the previous one.
