It's a bit tricky holding a party for a one year old because they themselves obvioulsy won't remember any of it. I think the best idea is to have a traditional party for the older kids to enjoy (jelly, cakes, pass the parcel etc) and make it really vibrant and colourful so that your one year old will be fascinated and hopefully really happy and smiley and then when he is old enough to look through the photos/film he'll see himself giggling away and happy at his first birthday party.

Whoa! I just celebrated my boy's first b'day last month. Well, we had a clown over to play with the kids (friends' kids from 4-13). The kids loveeee him. He was funny and amusing. Food, we had McD food for the kids, plus some of our local delicacy (for the adults). Music is more for the kids to play with the clown. He will ask kiddo questions like Kim Possible, Johny Bravo or get them to guess the music of the cartoons. Whoever got the answer right will be given a gift. Gift varies from scrape book, pencil case, note pads, balloons, teddy bears etc. All in all, it was fun!!!!

Art... get crayons & paper etc (paints are messy but good if you don't mind). Anything craft related. We did this at a family funday at a local pub/club at the weekend and henna tattoos ( - mhendi? not sure of spelling sorry) were most popular with the girls. Everyone loved drawing and painting and the very small ones really liked pom poms!

Perhaps you could do a large communal painting?

1 yr olds dont care, just give em cake and ice cream and let him make a huge mess. As for the other kids, give them some bubbles and crayons and tell them to draw the birthday boy.
Have adult bevys for the grown ups. (Not too much, they have to drive home)
