5 minutes just to get it in properly bcoz it hurt too much I couldn't bear to open my legs wide enough. The doc said I have very low pain tolerance. The scrapping part (to get a sample) is relatively painless though. Care to share your experience?

No, it is not normal to feel pain when the doctor inserts the speculum. Sometimes just being tense because of nerves can make the insertion painful if it's the woman's first time having this done.

Pain can also occur because of something wrong such as an infection.

As for the situation with your legs, I don't know how the stirrups were situated but it's possible that they could have needed to be readjusted.

I have been in gynecologist's offices where the stirrups were different in that the knees were put over them instead of the kind where the feet go in and that was a lot more comfortable.

I do have pain with speculum insertion but that is because I have something physically wrong in that area. One of the things for me that can make it very painful is when I get an infection going on.

I would definitely discuss your concerns further with this doctor and ask him more questions til you feel comfortable about this.

If you have more questions for me please feel free to e-mail or IM off site any time.

The reason probaly is that you have to relax your muscles really well for them to insert the instrument. If you dont relax all those muscels down there, it is hard as hell to get it in. Thats where the discomfort comes from. I just had one done myself and you have to open up wide and relax is the key. I know it is not very pleasant. You are not alone. I hope this helps.

I obviously felt a bit strange to have a metal speculum inserted.if you were a bit nervous or tense then it could have increased the discomfort if you started to have vaginal spasms.

A few minutes of pain/discomfort and embarrassment however are worth it as it could save you a lot of pain later and literally save your life

Felt uncomfortable when they inserted the tube in but it wasn't extreme pain. My doc helped me with some lubricant... maybe thats why mine was still fine...
