Our microwave is 5 years old and it stopped working. Wondering if its just a fuse or that's about the normal expected time of use.

I am a microwave cook. We use ours everyday. They do not last for years. I have to buy a new one between three to five years. I just bought a new one and it only cost $60+.
1100 watts.

They are on sell in August. So go over to WalMart and grab a GE (or other stores).

Be sure to get one with a turn table so you will not have to turn the food by hand.

You will like the newer features of the new microwave. Just punch the #1 for one minute; #2 for two minutes; #3 for three minutes and so on until you get up to seven minutes. Punch one button for coffee. One button for popcorn.Great time saver.

Microwaves do have fuses and they can blow. Depending on the type of microwave you have, you might want to just replace it. A counter top model is not terribly expensive, but the wall mounted type (above your stove) can sost a bit more. It can be a hassle, but if you are inclined, you can take the cover off (usually just a phillips screwdriver), and check the fuse. If your is a wall mounted unit, removing the microwave is alittle harder, but still doable with some help. Of course, you will unplug the microwave before opening the cover! If it's mounted above your stove, you might find the power cord inside a nearby cabinet.
There will likely be a wiring diagram inside the cover. If not, you can easily find the fuse by tracing the power wire inside the casing. Once you find the fuse, it should be easy to see if it is blown. If the conductor is broken (inside the protective glass/plastic) it's blown and needs replacing. If not, it may be a cracked board, or the magnetron is bad (the large tube and magnet that provides the frequencies needed for cooking). I don't suggest replacing the magnetron and bad boards are next to impossible to repair effectively. If it's not the fuse, I suggest you buy a new microwave.
HOWEVER, keep in the mind that a fuse is a protective device. If it blows, it's usually as a result of another problem. For example, if a circuit board cracks (can happen with vibration, they get brittle when they got old, heat, etc.), it can cause an increase in current and the fuse may blow. You could replace the fuse and still have the same problem, in which case your fuse will blow again. Maybe in second, an hour, a week. you everf know. And you may never be able to find the actual problem.
SO, it's up to you. If you have the time, tools, aptitude, etc. to try it, go ahead. Just be careful, don't hurt yourself. Otherwise, buy a new one.

The microwave I have has been a GOOD one. It has served us for 42 years now, ( believe it or not ) ! After the first fuse went out years ago, I brought the wires out of the cabinet, through the back vent holes. A in-line fuse holder is now easily accessible, if ever needed. A 19 cent fuse verses a $$$$$ new oven. No brainier!

Even highly qualified repair men, with all the safety kit (and you need some special stuff for microwave ovens) do not like doing that job.
The capacitors are not perfect pieces of product. When they go wrong, even apparently discharged ones can retain a lethal charge of electricity. A new micro can cost £50. I certainly would not risk my life fixing one for that sort of money, and wouldn't ask anyone else to.

Yes they have a fuse.

Sometimes they can be repaired.

Yes, but by the time you spend the money to fix them you can buy a new oven for less. Disposable is the key word here. There not worth fixing.

Yes, they can be repaired but, consider this, a repair may cost fifty to a hundred dollars, you can buy a new one at Wal-mart for maybe fifty bucks.

It looks like you received all good answers if it is a table top job, but if it is a built in - connected to your stove then you may opt to have it repaired.

To be honest it is your magnetron that is bad (the humming that was too loud) That thing costs almost as much as a new m/w costs throw it out and get a new one.
