The North did succeed in 'freeing' the Slaves, but aside from the unresolved issue that Slaves were property and who was to compensate their owners - - - aside from that by terms of a mostly secret agreement to allow Rutherford B Hayes the Republican to claim the Disputed Florida and Lousianna Votes and thus Become President over the rightfully elected but bland and unpopular Democrat Samuel Tilden in the Election of 1876, America's Centennial.. Essentially the South was given Notice that they could Still 'beat their N - - - - -s' that the North would turn a Blind Eye to laws keeping Blacks from voting at the polls, to keep blacks living seperate from White Folks, the South was assured that all the Evils of Racism except Slavery would be allowed, and so the South Won Reconstruction. Because the people of the South endured the reconstruction period following the War Between the States without significantly changing their minds or philosophies any. Slavery was technically ended; however the sharecropper system which evolved was no different from slavery; it was just semantics.

Although there were changes and reconstruction was harsh, basically the Southern attitude survived.

Bears-dont neglect the significant racism in the north.

Specifically Chicago where so many former slaves fled-the society was little different than most of the south.

Attitudes, differences, resentments and cultural identities are still on going.

Cheers,

Michael
