I have a P reg Nissan Micra. When I slow down or stop the engine cuts out like I've stalled but I haven't as my foot is fully down on the clutch. This keeps happening more and more. Any ideas what might be wrong with it and how much it would cost to fix?!
Thanks

When did you get it serviced last.
Could be it needs a new oil filter and oil.
If you have RAC/AA get it checked by them.

Does it cut out when you're idling in neutral or just when you depress the clutch when still in gear?
If it doesn't stall when you're idling in neutral then it's possible that your clutch is 'binding' (not de-coupling properly). If that's the case then you're into a costly repair, but it's worth chacking.

If it's stalls when idling in neutral then try the following:-
First check that your in-line petrol filter isn't blocked (replace it if in doubt), next check that none of the rubber pipes around the engine haven't perished and/or fallen off.

Check the air intake system:- filter, all air passageways and "throttle block", that's the bit where the butterfly valve is located. You should be able to see that when you remove the air fiter.

In most cars there is a set of small "bleed holes" close to the butterfly valve (flap) that allow air into the carburetter (or manifold on petrol injection cars) at idle speeds when the butterfly flap is closed. These can get blocked up so it's worth cleaning around there with a solvent.

Check your sparking plug gaps.

Check plugs and filters are clean, replace if very bad. If tickover is slow may need adjusting - quick and easy job. Fuel filter may need replacing - should be done every 3 years anyway.

Worst case - air leak in fuel line or around seals leading to carb / injector. Too much muck in the fuel tank - would need to have it removed and cleaned out. Fuel pump leaking or inefficient - unlikely but possible.

Have you're clutch linkage inspected. If the car idles in neutral but dies in gear with the cluch pedal depressed, the clutch isn't fully being released. I'm not sure weither your car has hydralic or cable linkage, but from what you're decribing, your problem may lay here.

in case you do various short journeys a dose of Redex could be all that's necessary. My daughters automobile has a similar problem. If it gets a 50 mile highway run it runs ok for somewhat. yet there are a number of different technical opportunities.

Does it stall with the gears in neutral? If neutral fixes it then a clutch problem.

could be a number of things, give it a service, see how that goes. sounds like a vaccum leak from the inlet manifold. check all the hose work for drawing air round the manifold.

Go to a garage to get it looked at, or are you just not keeping enough gas on?

Could be a fuel problem, change the fuel filter first.

Maybe you are going so slow you have simply stopped.
