You have a big box which is large enough to contain the object. You have several locks with keys. The box has a locking ring which is more than large enough to have a lock attached. But your friend does not have the key to any lock that you have.

How do you do it?

Note that you cannot send a key in an unlocked box, since it might be copied

Well, assuming your friend has a lock of her own, you lock the box, send it to your friend who puts her on her own lock and sends it back to you, you then remove your lock and send the box, secured with your friends lock, back to her and she opens her lock with her key

I have to admit I did not figure this out my self, http://www.cyberarmy.net/forum/security/messages/284199.html

I agree with tinkertailorcandlestickmaker. This is the method of Secure Internet Encription, e.g. when connected to an https: connection.

I first heard of this in a lecture by Simon Singh.

Use any lock and send the key by courier separately to him.
