I've noticed recently that whenever I turn on the air conditioner in my truck, the air will smell like mildew for about 30 seconds, and then for the most part after that, go back to normal. Anyone experienced this before, and if so, how can I fix it?

This smell is due to a bacteria build up on the evaporator core. The evaporator is usually behind the dash on most late model vehicles. Leaves, dirt, and other debris enter the HVAC housing through the cowl outside of the vehicle and collect on the evaporator. When condensation builds up on the evaporator, bacteria starts to develop on it. This is common for almost every manufacturer. Most dealerships carry an evaporator anti-bacterial treatment that will eliminate this problem. This has also been known to cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems with people who suffer from those types of things. If it is just the odor that you are concerned with, try turning the blower on high with the A/C on and on outside air ( that means take it off of max or recirc ), and spray some Lysol into the cowl outside of the vehicle and the blower will suck it in and through the fins of the evaporator. Good Luck.

If you have a cabin air filter change it. If not get some BG Frigi-Fresh and follow the instructions.

Also check the evaporator drain tube to make sure it is not clogged.
