You can goto the newspaper and look in the service directory under handyman and painting. To protect yourself, make sure he has commercial liability insurance and either workman comp or an exclusion form from your state. Your liable if he does not and you must protect your investment, everyone is so sue happy these days. Example, if he is on a latter, falls and gets hurt, your liable unless he has gave you prof of workman comp or the exclusion form. Great question...

One way I found a reasonable handyman was calling a local real estate agent and asking who they used. They try to help people fix up their houses before selling so have some names to share.
Doug brought up great points- licensed, bonded and workman's comp insurance are a must and they add to the price charged, but are well worth it for the safety factor. Good luck!
