The V-Star is a very good bike !! All the cruisers are solid. My advice would be to go around and sit on some different makes (Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki) and find one that fits you. Depending on how big you are, your comfort will vary.
I was in a similar situation as you when I got my first bike. I rode a little when I was in H.S., but nothing bigger than a 250. At 6'4", anything smaller than an 1100 was way too small for me.
I ended up buying a Honda VTX1300R and I love it. After riding it I realize I could have easily handled the 1800, but there's always time to move up in the future.
If you like the V-Star, go for it !! Do some shopping around, a used one may be the way to go....... but you can also think of it this way, a V-Star is a ton less $$ than a Harley Davidson !!
Get something big enough to fit you....take a safety class..... and get out there and have fun !!! I got my first at the age of 35 & every time i'm out riding I always think to myself...... "I can't believe what I've been missing all these years".

The V-star is a pretty good bike. Cruisers are relatively easy to ride and handle, so you could do a lot worse.
But for your first bike you should not get that beautiful new bike of your dreams. You're going to be hard on your first bike. You're going to abuse the clutch. You might drop the bike once or twice before you get the hang of it. You should get an 'old beater' and put a few thousand miles on it. Then not only will you be easier on that new bike but also you'll have a better idea what you want.
If it was me I'd look for something maybe 10 years old, Japanese, around 750 to 1000ccs. There are a lot of cruisers in that category--Magnas, Viragos, etc. Check out Craigslist. After six months or a year you can sell it again for what you paid for it.

The V* is a great bike. I have an 1100 (18,000 miles) and a friend has the 650. (13,000 miles) They have a good motor, handle very well and look nice. I've never heard of anyone complaining about their V*. The only thing I don't care for is to change the oil filter (not the oil only) is you have to take part of the exhaust off but this is a small complaint since everything else about the bike is great.
To get a lot of info on the bikes here's a great forum dedicated to V-stars.

Either one are good bikes, get the one that you like the most. Both will give you years of dependable service if you take care of it. Personally, and this is strictly personal, I'd go with the V-Star over the Shadow because (A) I've owned many Yamaha's over the years and have never had a bad one and (B) I like the seating position of the Yamaha over the Honda. Again, that's a personal choice and is not meant to say that the Honda is an inferior product. Also to correct a previous post; neither of them are chain drive, both are shaft drives. Like I said, sit on them both and, if possible, ride them both. Then get the one you like the most.

I LOVE my V Star!!
This is my starter bike. I've got a 2002 650cc Custom and it's been fantastic for me. My husband rides a Harley fat boy, and I can keep up with him at 90 mph easily. When they're parked side-by-side in the garage, they look surprisingly similar from the back.
I'm the 3rd owner of this V Star, and it's now got 11300 miles on it (after this weekend, that is! Did 200 miles yesterday. lol)
This little bike has got plenty of snap and tons of style. The only complaint that I have about mine is that I have a hard time accelerating and climbing steep hills at the same time, but my dealer says I can fix that with a big air kit.
I'll be in this bike for at least another year before I upgrade to that Midnight Warrior that I want so bad, but it's been a great bike for me.
I bought mine used from Craig's List and got a great deal on it, and a couple of riding buddies to boot so it was all good!
Keep it shiny side up and enjoy the ride!!

Yes, I had a V-star 650. It was a nice, strong bike, good handling, good mileage, fun to ride. Never had mechanical problems. I recently sold it and bought a 2007 Honda Shadow. You can find V-stars for cheap now days. I especially liked that it was shaft driven. I hate dealing with chains.

Always give year, make, engine size and model # when asking questions. We need all of that info to give an informed answer.
V stars come in different sizes and the year can make a difference.
