A scientific study was done on this recently (as in, in the last 3 or so years) and it really depends on the surface. If the floor is clean(ish) then the food is fine no matter if you wait 5 seconds or 15 minutes. If you drop it on a contaminated surface, the food gets contaminated rather quickly. Most floors aren't crawling with Salmonella or the likes so you should be good.

I found out on this program, the 5 second rule exists it's in fact the 15 minute rule! I found out that it takes 15 minutes for all the bacteria to get into the food so the 5 second rule is ok...It's just that it might attract some hair or dust to itself witch causes it to have bacteria but if its a dry food its ok...Help?

Who knows? I am just glad somebody came up with it, I sure do not waste like I used to. Does this apply for things that fall in yellow snow and those tootsie rolls left outside by pets?
