Lets assuming that on the front there are 2 of 240/45/R17
and on the rear 2 of 245/50/R17

or for an MOT do tyres require to be the same size on front and rear.

No they don't. The only problem would be if one tyre is of a different nominal size or aspect ratio to any other on the same axle.

ADD: 16 & 17 are different sizes!

Plenty of cars have different sized tyres front to rear as standard. Most powerful rear drive sports cars have bigger boots on the rear, and if I recall correctly Some older Citroens had bigger tyres on the front.
I think so long as the tyres are good and they don't protrude from, or foul the wheelarches, you'll be ok.

No.

Many rear-wheel-drive cars (mostly sports cars and supercars, but also the smart fortwo) are manufactured with larger tyres at the rear.

no i used to have a rover 214 i and always took it for its mot with larger tyres on the back than the front, it was the best car i ever had it never failed an mot all the time i owned it

no. some cars are made with different size tyres from new.

lotus do. also you see cars with spacesaver (get me home)spare wheels on this would make them ilegal
