As a young adult I believe it is wrong to let young people go to war at 18 and come back injured and not be able to have a drink. If more regulations were made for younger drinkers as well as parents being partly responsible for their minor children till they reach 21. They'd be less DUI's.

If you are 18 or a minor under the age of 18 (not emancipated) found drunk you go directly to jail, get your license suspended for two years, 1500 hrs of community service that must be completed before your license is reinstated. If found drunk at all in one's lifetime driving after suspension has lifted driver is charged with a felony. For those who think lowering the drinking age to 18 is retarded is retarded. True, men or women in the service can drink on base but, once they leave the service from a lost arm or leg at 18 they can't drink. That's my point, people!! Oh, and in no way does age give you experience in being a better drunk driver!! In no way does being older make you completely wiser nor does youth in all cases. Many older people are just as naive as any 15 year olds. To say parents aren't responsible for their MINOR drunk driving angel of death killing innocent people is ridiculous. If parents can take credit for their kids success they should also for they're pitfalls.

lttlehrse55 above is correct, military personal are allowed to drink in certain instances. There are a few states that allow those under 21 to drink; Ohio, at least up until recently (most states are raising the limits, not lowering them) had where anyone over the age of 18 could purchase beer and wine, but no hard alcohol.

Also agree with lowering the drinking age across the board would be a huge mistake and DUI's would at least quadruple in the first year alone. Nearly all States have a legal limit of .08 and for most people if you have had 2 or more drinks, you are over the legal limit. In some States even the first offense is now a felony. A felony conviction can keep you from getting a job in the future and may affect your ability to get scholorships and financial aid if you planned on or were attending college.

The "no drinking after dark" and making parents be more responsible for their minor children until they are 21 is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

First of all, most people don't start a party until after dark. Secondly, "After dark" is purely subjective could mean as early at 5pm in some states in Winter and as late as 10pm in other in the Summer.

As for the parents being more responsible for their children until age 21 down right is retarded, unless you are advocating that you should not have any rights as an adult until a person attains the age of 21...the parents should have have the responsibility without THEIR RIGHTS to control what the children they are responsible for are doing (this would include whether you go to college or just get a job to pay rent to Mom and Dad until you are 21 because if they are legally liable, you cannot enter into any legal contract, which would include rental agreement, who your friends are, how late you stay out and who you date).

if you want the right to drink at 18, you had better darn well be ready to accept the responsibility for it completely.

At 18 a child and move out etc. So why should the parents still remain responsible?? Sorry it doesn't work both ways. Your free to choose what you do then your free to suffer the consequences.
The reason why 18 year old can't drink is because 18 year old are friends with 17 and 16 year old making it more likely that they will get their hands on booze. When it goes up to 21 then the chances of 16 and 17 year old getting their hands on booze through friends decrease. The 18 year old might still get their hands on the booze through friends however he/she is much less likely to give it to the 16/17 year old seeing as they already had to jump through hoops for it.
Much like smoking the legal smoking age is 18 however there are plenty of adolescent under 18 who get their hands on it thanks to their 18 year old friends.
As for the soldiers they can't go to a local bar in America and drink. However they can drink on base at the officers club.
Actually no their wouldn't be less DUI's when the drinking age was dropped to 18 there were more DUI's and more teen deaths because of drinking and driving. That's why the age went up.

So if you join the armed forces you're allowed to buy alcohol? The should use this in their ads.

Seriously, how could you make parents responsible for kids over the age of 18? If you really want to lesseen DUIs the best bet would be to have automatic jail time. I worked at an alcohol and drug clinic and all it was was a sorry way or these people to get out of going to prison.

For the love of God don't think about lowering the age limit.
In Ireland, big drinkers that we are, the age limit is 18 and it should be higher. Kids as young as 15 are able to get served with fake I.D over here and binge-drinking is one of our highest problems. Ye have the right idea. 21 is a suitable age for one to take control of ones responsibilities.

I think lowering the drinking age to 18 is a death sentence for society! I do feel however, if you're hold enough to go to war you're old enough to drink....I use to live right by Fort Campbell, KY/TN (Gate 1) and never saw an underage soldier turned away from a drink. So really the law is fine and dandy the way it is. Our soldiers get by!

I said I lived right by Ft. Campbell not within, so my reference is towards the off base underage soldier

I know what you mean, and it's ridiculous and to the 1st poster that is false.

I was on active duty and luckily never got caught underage and then was old enough.
Active duty service members a NOT allowed to drink underage in fact they can be prosecuted and face restriction (house arrest) and loose 1/2 months pay for 2 months and can be reduced in rank.

I've seen many NonJudicialPunishments just for underage drinking and with no more proof than a so called witness
The military legal system is retarted!

One has nothing to do with the other!

The ages were increased as many teens had issues with driving while intoxicated, killing themselves or others! My son happened to be one who was killed in his own car after a Frat party with his car being driven by a friend, He died as well! Staes are not going to lower them unless they could without getting there highway funds taken away!

The Feds were behind the increase in ages, and was going to sanction any state who did not raise them of their highway funds!

Tell you the truth, most teen drivers I have seen can't handle hydroplaning, black ice, snow and many other conditons sober!. And they are not a pretty sight drunk behind the wheel of a car as they can't handle the car or their booze! They have no fear of death at their age as it is never going to happen to them! Both driving and handling booze takes years of experience!

Most the people in the military do drink, and can get booze on base, or just about anywhere overseas!

Soldiers are allowed to drink, it's those who aren't sacrificing their lives, time, etc under 21 who cannot drink.
