I think the closest thing we have to a Philosopher-King is Ron Paul, the Republican candidate for President in 2008.
Why do I make such a bold claim? Because Paul does not refer to himself as a "savior" or a "guidepost" for the lost sheep of America, but rather, true to the constitution, he leads people to values. When people try to aggrandize HIM, he just keeps pointing back to the truth of the principles of the Founders, of limited government, of individual privacy and the spirit of entrepreneurship and local civic involvement. He realizes that human beings are essentially flawed, therefore no politician or bureaucrat should EVER claim to "know better" than the people and make policies and systems to take care of us from cradle to grave.
The constitution is, in its essence, a document of immense philosophical weight. And Governor Paul is applying this philosophy to our wayward American politique. If you want to learn more, check out this link:

Be careful what you wish for! Having someone in power who believes that they are uniquely well placed to know what is best for society is a recurring characteristic of most facist and totalitarian regimes. It's not that bigger step from 'Platonic Guardian' to an Orwellian 'Big Brother'.

i think so. he just needs to be shrewd enough to know how to play the game. he can't be too clean else the other politicians will all gang up on him. he can't be too dirty either else he won't have credibility left.
