Hi,

First, find out what USDA zone you are in: http://www.growit.com/bin/USDAZoneMaps.exe?MyState=MS

Then you can order some strawberry plants from a mail order company (their websites/catalogues will list which zones they grow well in). Some that I like are www.burpee.com, www.startbros.com, www.henryfields.com, and www.gurneys.com. Unfortunately, most places aren't selling them now - you may need to wait until the spring.

Next, choose a variety that sounds good. There are two types - JuneBearing and EverBearing. JuneBearing give a big crop for a few weeks in June. Great to harvest for jellymaking. Everbearing give smaller crops throughout the summer. I have had much better luck with JuneBearing... A good option is to buy a set with multiple varieties so you get some different kinds.

To plant them, find a sunny spot with good soil (till it or use a pitchfork to loosten it up). The plants will reproduce by sending runners underground so don't plant too close together. 25 plants is enough for a nice big strawberry patch. Water and weed and you will soon have strawberries.

Good Luck

Yeah you can, strawberries grow well in most enviroments, and they are really easy to grow too! Just make sure to keep the bugs off of them. I would find a strawberry plant to start with, and not a strawberry itself for planting, I am not sure how well that will grow for you. Happy Gardening!

Prepare a ridge or bed and plant the strawberries about 6" apart. Strawberries need to be changed to a new ridge every two years. Strawberries propagates through its roots which can be removed when they have taken root and beginning to mature and planted in a new location. Straw in placed around the berries when they begin to appear, hence the name.

Use good organic soil, and bunches of water. They are easy enough. Growing them in pots so they trail down helps keep the bugs and slugs away.

I grew beautiful strawberries, but you may have to put wire around your plants, because animals ate mine.
