Just install the right soundcard driver. The surround audio control icon should appear on the lower right tray.

that might be coused by the kind of audio drivers installed some devices do not support surround speakers, what you should do is either install a PCI sound card that can support surround systems, like Realtek and onboard mercury computer boards will support that.
