Vick is done in Atlanta. Blank is using Goodell as a shield to prevent another T.O. disaster in Atlanta. If Blank and the team decide to suspend Vick, then the union will challenge it in court and probably win. Also, there will be a backlash against the organization by players that support Vick. If Goodell decides to hand out the suspension, then the union will have a harder time fighting it considering the precedence was set with Henry and Jones. Also, Blank can tell the players on his team that it wasn't his decision, so hopefully there will be no resentment.
As for after the year, if Vick is found not guilty, the Falcons will release him. He will probably sign on with another team, but only for a year or two. Atlanta will go after a QB in free agency, hoping to cash in on the talent they have now, but Petrino may decide to start over if the cap room isn't there.

I think that Atlanta needed to suspend Vick instead of Goodell, because he, along with Tank Johnson, Chris Henry, and "Pac-Man" Jones, are going to be the template for what happens for off the field issues. If the Falcons would have supspended him, then it would have made it look like they were a capable organization that handles their players. The Titans couldnt handle Jones; the Bears couldn't handle Tank; the Bengals cant handle any of their players. Now if another player acts up, then Goodell will have to act immediately, because if 4 teams can handle those kinds of players, then what makes Goodell think anyone else will? This is the grim fate that lies ahead.
As a precautionary act, Goodell needs to suspend Vick, because guilty or not, the commissioner has to do it. What's worse: Having an innocent man sit out for a season, or a guilty man play? Letting a guilty man play is a distraction to his team, his players, the entire league, the fans, and the entire country. If he's suspended, then he goes into hiding, and we can forget about him til thanksgiving comes around and his trial date arrives. And at least if he's innocent, he can spend time with his family, since being a football player is a full-time job.
His suspension is imminent, and is absolutely necessary for the image of the NFL.

Vick will get a full year of unpaid suspension, just like Pacman, and I think Goodell might say that he reserves the right to suspend Vick for even longer depending on how his criminal trial turns out.

I don't know, honestly. I wouldn't want to be Goodell right now cuz if he suspends him for the rest of the season and then isn't convicted that would look bad, if he is allowed to play and then found guilty, that would also look bad. It's a catch 22.

Right now, he is on paid suspension. However, my guess is that Goodell will give him the same treatment Adam Jones received ... a full year of unpaid suspension.

Apparently the Falcons are getting ready for the season without him...a suspension looks like it will happen.
That depends...Goodell I believe has the power to suspend without pay if he so chooses, as do the Falcons.

Considering the scale of public outrage and seriousness of the charges against Vick, I would say he will definitely be suspended at least until his trial date.
What would it look like if he played all season, then the judge sent him to prison in the middle of the playoffs?

The NFL is denying that they are about to suspend Vick. They claim they are conducting a investigation into the charges of their own, and this investigation has not been concluded at this juncture.

Vick was already ordered not to go to training camp...Goodell isn't gonna let him report now...Vick is done unless he is found not guilty...but lets face it...He won't be found not guilty at this point...
