I believe that's what instincts are. They are your brain's initial diagnosis of the situation. This message tells you what may be the best way to handle the situation so that you may experience the best positive outcome with the least negative reprucussions.
----edit---
On a side note, your instincts can be very biased as they are subconscious analyses based on your limited conscious experiences.

I think the description you give above is something I would describe as both your instinct telling you to stay away and your memory reviewing the consequences if you don't. A terrific combination to help you determine your course of action. One does not negate the other.
A century or more ago people automatically trusted their instincts. Once we became a more educated nation we began to value our brains more and we were told to use our head and to think and we have moved away from trusting our instincts.
I believe you can always trust your instincts. I'd have saved myself a lot of grief in earlier years had I trusted mine.

Instinct is behavior that is mediated by reactions below the conscious level. And when it is said to trust your instinct, it means it's a feeling that comes from deep inside your gut...and 9.5 times out of 10 it will ultimately be the right course to take and the right thing to do.

Never distrust your instinct or defense mechanism. Either one is made to keep you safe, if you do not believe its your instinct then continue a little further into the situation but if the feeling become stronger back out of it.

that is a learned skill, some take longer than others to figure it out. eventually one figures, based on experience, that his "instinct, or gut feeling" is telling him the right thing to do. Often inspite of very specific instructions, the instinct or Gut feeling will lead you to a better (safer) way of acomplishing your goal, and it is not often wrong. But you have to find that out for yourself.

instinct...wow is a gut feeling, we don't listen to it but is is that nagging in the back of our brain...when we listen to slow down on the road sure enough the cop is there...we do for that to test it ...all of us wants someone else to pick up the slack we go against what we know is right...and in doing that we lose our connection to even having instinct

Instincts are like a sense of smell. You just sense something and notice it. You don't have to make a big deal of it, but just be aware of it.

Always, always follow your gut feeling. I'm a logical person with this one exception. To listen to that inner voice and ignore the facts does not make sense, don't know how it works, it just does.

Whatever it is , it comes from a mix of your experience & common sense ...
As such , it depends on how much of each you have I guess .

...I trust that "inner voice" when it is telling me to do something out of LOVE.
...and I distrust it when it is telling me to do something out of FEAR.
