What does it mean when my car "misses", and what can I do to fix it? I have a 2003 Ford Mustang v6 3.8 with about 52,000 miles, sorry about all the details. I've noticed that my car has some problems with it. For example, I asked my brother-in-law for a second opinion, and so I asked him to turn it on. He said that when he turned it on, it seems like it misses, whatever that means. Also I've noticed that my car shakes a lot from the steering wheel and the seats. I'm just wondering how that problem can be fixed. Any ideas??? Thank you to everyone who answers this question, and please honest answers. Peace :)>-

Missing is a miss fire in a cylinder or cylinders. You could have anywhere from a spark plug or spark plug wire that's bad or you could have a bad injector. Take it to a local sop and have them run a diagnostic on there machine to pull the codes and find out where it is miss firing. That is the first step.

People explained what misfiring was, but if you're lost on what cars do, it might have gone over your head. So let me try to give a little more information on this.
Your engine is a V6. So inside your engine, there are 6 chambers (hence the "6" part) Inside each chamber (called cylinders), there is a piston that moves up and down. It:
--first moves down to take air into the cylinder.
--second moves up to compress the air. At this time, gasoline is sprayed into the cylinder.
--The spark plug ignites the mixture and the third stroke is the piston moving down your cylinder. This is how your vehicle gets power.
--The 4th stroke is the piston moving back up and pushing the used gas out (exhaust)
Your brother-in-law is probably correct. It is likely a misfire. What that means is there are one or more cylinders in your vehicle that are not igniting the air-fuel mixture properly. (See the third stroke). When that happens, your car tends to shake like you described.
Not only does this waste fuel and is highly annoying, but it also can lead to larger problems down the line. It may burn out your catalytic converter early or cause Oxygen Sensor problems. Ford computers are really good at adjusting things so you might not even notice other problems until the check engine light finally comes on. By that time, there may be a million codes in the computer (exaggerating the number, of course).
Usually, a simple tune up is all that is necessary to fix it. Plugs...maybe wires. Might need some other things. But the majority of the time, that is the biggest issue that causes misfires. At 52,000 miles, it's about time for them to wear out.

The main problem is it's a Ford, Fixed Or Repaired Daily, the term misses, is referring to the engine miss firing, because the spark plugs aren't igniting the fuel in the cylinders. That can be cause by a number of things, the shaking is because the engine isn't running smoothly so you'll feel the vibration in the car.Take it in to the shop and get it looked at, it may be an easy fix. Good luck, next time by a Chevy

Seems that your 6 cylender mustang is only running on 5 (or maybe 4?) of the 6 cylenders. The other one is "missing"or rather "mis-firing". This causes your car the run unevenly and shake. It also will not have as much power, and waste gasoline. It could be a number of things but must likely just a worn out spark plug.

It means 1 or more cylinders are not firing (burning fuel). Yes it will shake the car a lil. It could be a bad coil /spark plug / injector/plug wire. Unless you can diagnose this yourself you should get it checked out. The unburned fuel will be burned by the catalytic converter if it overheats it could be damaged. So get it fixed soon or it will cost way more later.

One or more cylinders are misfiring (missing). The reason could either be with the fuel system or with the spark system. A bad coil on the plug, or dirty injector. Take it in and see if there are any error codes stored on the computer. You didn't mention if you have had any check engine lights on or not.

it means that its probably not firing on all cylinders, this causes a loss of power as well as gas mileage,it usually means it needs a good tune up,but other things can cause this also,it might be something that you would want a shop to look at they can tell you more about what its doing once they hear it run,if you do find out that's all it needs, and you get it done, you,ll notice a lot of difference in the way it runs, good luck on it.
